On October 5th 2018 Katara Opera House in Doha will hold the performance of one of the prominent church-singing ensembles of Russia – the choir of Sretensky Monastery. The concert is organized with support of Rosneft Oil Company, the main partner of the event.
The ensemble has given concerts at top locations worldwide – from the Carnegie Hall to Vatican. Besides sacred music, repertoire of the choir includes the best compositions of national singing tradition – Russian, Ukrainian and Cossack folk songs, WW2 songs, popular Russian romantic songs.
Since 2005, Nicon Zhila has been the only regent of the choir. He is a priest and a professional musician, who used to sing in the choir of the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius back in his childhood. After appointment as the leader of the ensemble with the blessing of archimandrite Tikhon (Shevkunov), he has boosted the potential of the choir: under his leadership, the first studio album was recorded and the musicians went on tour.
Sretensky choir has 30 members, including professional singers, composers and orchestrators. The core of the ensemble consists of seminary students of Moscow Theological Seminary, vocalists of the Moscow Academy of Choir Singing, Moscow Conservatory, Musical Academy after the Gnesins.
